Mark and his Harley Sportster has a combined mass of 950kg. a) Ignoring road and air friction, how much work is involved in accelerating the motorcycle from 0 to 100km/hr.
b) Mark claims that his 95hp cycle can go from 0 to 100 km/hr in 3.5 seconds. Assuming 100% efficiency, is this possible? Show how much horsepower is required.

Solutions

Expert Solution

In part a, work required is equal to the change in kinetic energy is just conservation of energy.

in part b we have calculated power required for accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h is 140.37 hp that is greater than bike's given capacity (95 hp). So it is not possible to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h by his motorcycle. His claim is not correct.

If you have any doubt, feel free to ask in the comments.

A 1830-kg car experiences a combined force of air resistance and friction that has the same magnitude whether the car goes up or down a hill at 34.5 m/s. Going up a hill, the car's engine needs to produce 74.7 hp more power to sustain the constant velocity than it does going down the same hill. At what angle is the hill inclined above the horizontal?

The numeric range within parenthesis maps to the preceding letter grade. If the user gave you a number greater than 100 or less than 0, you should print a message that the input is invalid.
