Answer =

Explain the function of each of the loci in the space provided.  Include if the locus is a cis element or a coding region. If a coding region, include what the coding region produces and the protein’s function.  If the locus binds a trans-acting factor, include this as well and the function of the binding.

CAP locus = represents binding site for CAP (catabolite activated protein).

When CAP binds to CAP binding site, it promotes the transcription by helping RNA polymerase bind to the promoter.

is cis acting element.

Lac P locus = reprents the promoter.promoter is the binding site.promoter is the binding site of RNA polymerase, when RNA polymerase binds to the promoter then transcription initiated.

is cis acting element

Lac Z locus - it represents the z gene it codes for beta-galactosidase enzyme which catalyzes the hydrolysis of lactose into glucose and galactose.

it is coding region.

Lac Y locus = it represents galactoside permease.it transports lactose into the cell across the cell membrane.

it is coding region.

Lac A locus - it represents a gene.a gene codes for transacetylase enzyme which helps betagalactosidase enzyme.

it is coding region.

Lac O locus - it represents the operator. operator is the binding site for lac repressor.

cis acting element

it acts as negatively regulating site.when lac repressor bound to operator, RNA polymerase can not bind to the promoter and start transcription.

Lac I locus = represents repressor.

is a trans acting regulator.

it binds to the operator, prevents the binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter.

he lac operon in E. coli regulates the co-expression of three genes needed for the degradation of lactose (but absence of glucose) in the growth medium. These genes are not expressed when the bacteria has no lactose to feed on. How does the cell prevent expressing the lac operon in the absence of lactose? How does the presence of lactose activate the transcription of these three genes? (You do not need to explain the glucose level regulation.)
