conceptual models of health are
presented to summarize the current meanings for health. The medical
model is the most widely used definition in the United States, but
the World Health Organization model has gained in popularity during
the past several decades. In addition, there are other newer
models-the wellness model and the environmental model-that are
adding new meanings to the definition of health. By understanding
and combining these different meanings, the prospects for improving
medical outcomes and the quality of care are enhanced. This
conceptual work is a prelude to improving health status assessment
in a variety of contexts.
The most widely used
conceptualization of health is the one provided by the medical
model, best captured in WHO'sterms as " the absence of disease or
infirmity " Realizing that such 'negative' definition was reducing
the study of health to determining to categories of disease or
mortality, the World Health Organization introduced in the
beginning of its constitution a definition placing health in the
broader context of human well-being: " A state of complete
physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence
of disease or infirmity .
Criticizing the tendency of
practitioners to largely ignore the link between body and mind, the
wellness model considers health in terms of the strength and
ability to overcome illness. Rather than seeing it as a snapshot
state characterizing individuals, it is conceived as some sort of
capital, a " reserve of health . In the 1970's, the various
conceptualizations started being criticized for being overly
idealistic and open-ended, neglecting the important aspects related
to stresses and interactions with the environment
