Texas has always prided itself for being a low tax, low service state. Should it change its priorities to provide more services?
Texas being a low service state doesn't deprive of services to its residents but rather it doesn't give any cost benefit to the consumer. For instance, some states offer college education at state school at reduced fees for state residents thus providing them a cost benefit. This doesn't happen in Texas. So, are Texas' residents better off? Well, to offset this, Texas offers relatively lower tax rates so that households can save more and need not rely on cost benefits to use the resources but can themselves purchase.
But in my opinion as long as the offset between taxes and services are maintained, there is no real necessary for Texas to change priorities. The tax rates absorb a good chunk of households and when they are being charged lower taxes, the surplus can be used in any form as desired by the consumer not just towards the services offered by the state, thereby giving them the freedom to spend their additional savings due to low taxes in whatever means they deem fit.
Hope this helps. Do hit the thumbs up. Cheers!
