NH4CIO4 is the solid rocket fuel used by the U.S Space Shuttle. It reacts with itself to produce nitrogen gas (N2), chlorine gas (Cl2), oxygen gas (O2), water, and a great deal of energy. What is the maximum mass(in grams) of oxygen gas that can be produced by the reaction of 7.28g of NH4ClO4?
Solution :-
Balanced reaction equation
2 NH4ClO4 ------ > N2 + Cl2 + 2 O2 + 4 H2O
Now lets first calculate the moles of the NH4ClO4
moles= mass / molar mass
moles of NH4ClO4 = 7.28 g / 117.4891 g per mol
= 0.06196 mol NH4ClO4
now using the mole ratio lets calculate the moles of the O2
mole ratio of the NH4ClO4 to O2 is 2 : 2
0.06196 mol NH4ClO4 * 2 mol O2 / 2mo, NH4ClO4 = 0.06196 mol O2
Now lets convert the moles of O2 to its mass '
mass of O2 = moles * molar mass
= 0.06196 mol O2 * 32.0 g per mol
= 1.98 g O2
So the maximum mass of the oxygen gas (O2) that can be produced = 1.98 g
