If the proportion of an African population that are carriers of the Sickle Cell allele (HbS) is 0.409, what is the HbS allele frequency in the population? NOTE: You may get more than one solution for this question. If so, choose the smaller frequency. A. 0.652. B. 0.252. C. 0.060. D. 0.622. E. 0.287.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Carriers carry recessive allele(s) as well as the dominant allele. They are the heterozygous organisms and the recessive allele is not expressed on them as they carry the dominant allele as well.

According to the question, the frequency of carrier is 0.409. so the frequency of Sickle cell allele (HbS) is 0.409/2 = 0.2045 (as Human carriers 2 number of alleles for each gene and carriers contain single HbS allele). After comparing the calculated HbS frequency value we can easily discard option C. Option B and option E are also rejected as they are close to the HbS frequency value, calculated only from the carriers /heterozygotes. The frequency from the HbS homozygotes is yet to be calculated.

As we know in African population the frequency HbS allele is greater from the normal allele, so we can chose the highest frequencies from the option i.e. option A and option D.

According to the direction from the question, the lowest frequency value have to be chosen, so the correct answer here is option D = 0.622.

HbS, the variant of hemoglobin responsible for sickle-cell anemia, aggregates into long chains in aqueous, biological conditions (pH 7.4, 37oC, some salt and buffer present). Explain this phenomenon from a molecular point of view. Why does it form chains, not globular aggregates? Why is this phenomenon unsurprising to biochemists familiar with the details of protein folding?

The frequency of the sickle cell allele is high in populations at low elevations in East Africa, where mosquitos breed year-round, and lower in high elevation populations where mosquitos are much less abundant. Which, if any, evolutionary processes might contribute to these differences in allele frequencies? Explain your answer.

The son, Seif, is born with sickle cell anemia. This means both parents carry the allele for sickle cell anemia. The father, Ahmad has a heterozygous genotype as told by the doctor. The mother can also be proved heterozygous for the trait since her mother was anemic. This means one of the affected alleles was inherited from the mother. So, the genotypes of Ahmad is Ss and that of Amina is Ss. Gametes formed by Ahmad are S and s....

An African American young adult is admitted to the emergency department in sickle cell crisis with a report of 10/10 pain. The patient is known to several of the nurses and physicians in the department who have labeled the patient as a “drug seeker”. Initial Discussion Post: Identify one (1) intervention that can be taken by the RN to reduce the stigma and improve management of acute and chronic pain associated with sickle cell disease. Does the intervention apply only...

1.Which is true about sickle-cell anemia? Choose all that are true. The allele that causes the disease is recessive. Natural selection favors the heterozygote in areas with malaria. The mutation that causes it is a SNP. People homozygous for the sickling allele experience episodes of severe pain that may permanently damage their vital organs. 2.What was probably a selective pressure against dark skin in the our earliest ancestors to leave Africa?
