Question 1) Excess body weight is associated with an increase in hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, certain forms of cancer, and musculoskeletal disorders.

Question 2) a) Physiological: disorders, diseases, and medications used to treat those diseases (ex. polycystic ovarian syndrome, heart conditions, diabetes, sleep apnea, and steroidal medications)

b) Physical: pain, decreased physical activity, immobility

c) Financial: limited income, lack of resources, work schedules.

  • Non judgmental: One should not be judgmental while discussing the weight loss as there could be many reasons behind the weight gain of people.
  • Respect the beliefs: While discussion one should respect the beliefs, values of the culture of the patient.
  • Knowing the reason and cultural beliefs: Healthcare professionals should know about the cultural beliefs and reasons regarding weight gain.

Obesity is one of the major cause which leads to increase the risk of developing diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension etc. One should maintain his body weight so as to decrease the risk of diseases. The indulgence of 35 minutes of daily walk, running or jogging is sufficient to keep body healthy and fit. People should change their lifestyle such as quit smoking, quit junk food and consume healthy and nutritious foods.

  • Follow a healthy diet, and if you are overweight or obese, reduce your daily intake by 500 calories for weight loss

  • Limit the time spend being physically inactive.
