What are the modes of transmission, main signs and symptoms and treatments of hepatitis B?
OVERVIEW:
- The hepatitis B virus is a DNA virus that belongs to the
Hepadnaviridae family of viruses.
- Hepatitis B virus not related to the hepatitis A virus or the
hepatitis C virus.
MODES OF TRANSMISSION :
Hepatitis B transmitted by :
- exposure to infected blood or body secretions.
- In infected individuals, virus can be transmitted by blood,
semen, vaginal discharge, breast milk, and saliva and not spread by
food, water, or by casual contact.
In U S, sexual contact is common mode of transmission
- This virus can also be transmitted by sharing toothbrushes and
razors that is contaminated with infected fluids or blood.
Hepatitis B can be transmitted by vertical' transmission i.e. from
infected mothers to their babies at birth.
- Hepatitis B can be spread through transfused blood products,
donated livers and other organs.
SYMPTOMS OF HEPATITIS B:
Symptoms of acute hepatitis B:
- fatigue
- loss of appetite
- nausea
- jaundice
- pain in the upper right abdomen
symptoms of chronic hepatitis B may include:
- weakness
- fatigue
- loss of appetite
- weight loss
- breast enlargement in men
- a rash on the palms
- difficulty with blood clotting,
TREATMENT:
Treatment for acute hepatitis B infection:
Incase of acute hepatitis B infection which means short-lived and
will go away on its own then it may not require any treatment.
Instead need rest, proper nutrition and plenty of fluids while your
body fights the infection. Sometimes, antiviral drugs or a hospital
stay also recommended.
Treatment for chronic hepatitis B infection:
- Antiviral medications
- Interferon injections
- Liver transplant.
