What beat frequency would be heard by a tuba player in a marching band, of a note with a frequency of 4.50E2 Hz and the notes echo off a stationary building; if he is walking towards the building at a speed of 1.56 m/s, on a hot day with a temperature of 34.3 degC?
If f and f0 be the Doppler shifted and normal frequency of sound, then we can write
where c is the velocity of sound
vr is the velocity of the receiver which is positive or negative depending on whether the receiver is moving towards or away from the source.
vs is the velocity of the source which is positive or negative depending on whether the source is moving away or towards the receiver.
Here, the sound is emitted by the band which gets reflected by the building. So the building is a virtual source and the band is the receiver.
The band is moving towards the building(source), hence vr is positive.
Velocity of sound at any temperature T is given by
Hence at 34.3 deg C
Using these values in the Doppler equation,
Beat frequency is
