Describe some of the similarities between the permanent magnets and electromagnets

Solutions

Expert Solution

A permanent magnet is an object made from a material that is magnetized and creates its own persistent magnetic field. As the name suggests, a permanent magnet is 'permanent'. This means that it always has a magnetic field and will display a magnetic behavior at all times while an electromagnet is a kind of magnet whose magnetic field is created by the flow of electric current. The magnetic field disappears when the current stops.

These two has some advantages and disadvantages over one- another according to their uses.

If we only talk about the similarities between these two:

Both the permanent and electromagnet have magnetic field lines of force around them. Both have characteristic of attraction and repulsion. Both have two magnetic poles (north and south).  Both can make temporary magnets from iron, nickel, cobalt, neodymium.
