Consider a process that consists of three workstations: The first workstation (WS 1) takes 20 minutes per unit, the second workstation (WS 2) takes 10 minutes, and the third workstation (WS 3) takes 15 minutes per unit. Each workstation is staffed by one worker.
(a) What is the net processing time per unit?
(b) What is the cycle time per unit?
(c) What is the utilization of the process?
(d) How many units of output can be produced a day, if the process runs an 8-hour shift a day?
a) Net processing time per unit =Time at first workstation + Tim at second workstation + Time at thrd workstation
= 20 + 10 + 15 minutes = 45 minutes
b) Cycle tiem per unit will be decided by th bottleneck operation requiring maximum time. Therefore, cycle time per unit = 20 minutes
c) Utilization of the process = Total duration of all activities / ( number of workstations x cycle time ) x 100
= ( 20 + 10 + 15) / ( 3 x 20) x 100
= 45/60 x 100
= 75%
d) Outputs that can be produced in 8 hour shift = 480 minutes/cycle time 20 minutes = 24 units
