When it comes to alcoholism and drug dependence, why are older adults more at risk for the worse possible outcomes and what can be done?
Alcoholism and Drug dependence in Older adults and its effects:
Alcoholism is a chronic disease caused by compulsive and uncontrollable consumption of alcoholic beverages , leading to addiction and deterioration in health and social functioning. Drug dependence is an irresistible physical or psychological need, especially for a drug or a chemical substance. Example morphine or Cocaine. Alcohol and drug dependence have serious adverse effects on the physical and mental health of the people, especially elderly population are more at risk of worst possible outcome of this evil.
Outcomes / risk of alcoholism and drug dependence on older adults:
Alcoholism and Drug dependence cause a number of illness in physical and mental state of an older adult: such as,
* Serious drug interactions
* falls and injuries
* Poor nutrition and health status
* Dehydration, may possess the risk for kidney issues , brain swelling, coma , seizures etc.
* Cognitive impairment
* Social isolation
* Increased morbidity and mortality among Elderly.
interventions:
* Early diagnosis and treatment: Early recognition of alcoholism and drug dependence in elderly can help health professionals and family members to plan the care for the elderly.
The care takers should be able to identify some of the signs of alcoholism and drug dependence on elderly. such as:
- daily use of Alcohol and drugs
- extreme fatigue
- mood swings
- blood shot eyrs
- slurred speech
- drinking or using of drugs secretly.
-memory loss
- poor co ordination and balance
- social isolation, solitary behaviour
- confusion
- Changes in eating or sleeping habits etc.
* Communicate with them openly regarding the substance abuse.
* Encourage to ventilate their feelings
* Talk with them in love and compassion and also regarding alcohol related problems and adverse effects on elderly.
* Collaborative individualized treatment plan ; Treatment that addressing all the needs of the patient , including chronic medical diseases ,lack of support system and financial problems.
* Drug rehabilitation in patient programmes.
* Detoxification should be under strict medical supervision : The most abusing drugs in old age are benzodiazepines, opioids and alcohol. These drugs may cause severe withdrawal effects.
* Integrate a compassionate care by a health team : A team of health professionals can deliver an integrated care to elderly, who are under the influence of alcoholism and drug dependence.
* Cognitive therapy to change negative cognitions
* family therapy to reduce stress on them to give a happy environment to elderly by family members.
