W.Z., a 14-year-old young man has become much more sedentary and spends most of his time texting friends and playing video games online. In the past, he was an outstanding defensive player on his soccer team. His soccer coach has contacted him several times, but he says, “I’m not into that now…besides I suck at sports!” He currently weighs 180 lbs. and is 5’6”.

1. What is W.Z.’s body mass index? (See Charts in Back Cover.)

2. What significant changes can you identify in this case history, and what measures might be effective in helping W.Z.?

3. What major complications can W.Z. expect if he does not become more active? (See Metabolic Syndrome.)

Solutions

Expert Solution

1, Body mass index:

W.Z weight 180lbs ..covert weight into kilograms..so 180lbs =81kg,his height is 5'6'' convert height into meter..so 5'6"= 1.6m

BMI=81÷(1.6×1.6)

81÷ 2.56 =31.6

So W.Z BMI is 31.6

2, Average BMI for 14years old boy is 26 only..but he is 31.6..he is considered as a overweight teen age boy.. reason for this overweight is he not physically active..

Measures:

Weight reduction is a main goal and plan for W.Z...W.Z has to make some goal and his own plan to find some time for his physical activity to fill the gaps instead of seeing mobile and playing mobile games..he has to consume healthy foods and do not skip break fast..he has to do some light exercise before break fast even if it is stretching.. he should avoid buying meals in the school cafeteria or fast food restaurant..he has to eat his meals slowly for easy break down process..must eat before 9 pm..

When chating with friends they will choose some baked and dried snacks like chips.. instead of that choose fresh fruits and vegetables..he has to take 8glasses of water a day..W.Z has to walk as much as he can and do exercise daily to burn calories..he has to check his weight weekly once and record his process..

3,Major complications:

If he is watching mobile without physical activity there will be excess fat around the waist and Abnormal cholesterol or triglycerides levels that can cause metabolic syndrome..he can also have high risk of heart disease,stroke ane diabetes..most of the disorder associated with metabolic syndrome have no symptoms...but there will be large waist circumference is a visible sign..in case if the person having high blood sugar there will be signs and symptoms of thirst and urination,fatigue and blurred vision..main causes for this metabolic syndrome is obesity and inactivity..risk factors include age,race,obesity,diabetes,cardiovascular disease,nonalcoholic fatty liver disease etc..
