Tech A says that in some vehicles, airbag deployment can be based on the speed of the impact and the weight of the seat occupant. Tech B says that the SRS seat belt pretensioners tighten the seat belt when you connect the seat belt. Who is correct?

Answer:

Tech A says that in some vehicles, airbag deployment can be based on the speed of the impact and the weight of the seat occupant. Tech B says that the SRS seat belt pretensioners tighten the seat belt when you connect the seat belt.

Tech A is correct as the deployemnet of the airbags is always based on the severity of the impact and sometimes it is designed on the basis of the weight of the seat occupant while in case of seat belt pretenioner, it is the one of the part of seat belt system which is locked in case of impact.

Explaination

Airbag systems are the best supplemental way to protec one from the impact and work best when used and designed with the seat belt. Air bag reduces the chance that your upper body will be safe during the impact as dealt belt only takes care of chest and its upper area protection.

When airbag is deployed

Whenever there is severe to moderate crash, signal is sent from airbag ECU to inflator with the airbag module. An ignitor which is present there starts a chemical reaction and harmless gas is produced which the to inflate the airbag unit in the blink of the eye which is 1/20th time of the sec.

In a airbag which is available with occupant detection system uses that there should be some weight of the passenger on the seat which is around 45 kg. If the weight is not detected, airbag unit does not work. If with the help of occupant detection system the weight detected is more than 45kg, in that case it will cause the air bag to deploy with full force on the basis of severity

How seat belt pretensionar works

Seat Belt Pretensioners are the part of seat belt system which is used to remove the slack from the seat belt if in case of any collision or impact occurence. The use of pretensioners in the seat belt system is as given below

  • Used to remove slack of seat belt during collision
  • It increase the tension of seat belt around the passenger and automatically locks the seat belt
  • It utilises a explosive charge to initiate a piston to work once the accident is detected by the sensor
  • During a collision, the pretensioner utilizes an explosive charge to initiate a concealed piston once the sensors detect that an accident
  • Mechanical and electronic bolt type of pretensioners are available
  • Seat belt buckle is connected with the powerful spring that remains compressed in a tube before an accident
