The following five men are in a room discussing evolution, which one most likely could not agree with the other four on most concepts associated with evolution? Can you also give a short explanation of why you chose that answer.
A. Charles Darwin
B. Alfred Wallace
C. Charles Lyell
D. A modern day biologist
E. Georges Cuvier
Answer : E. Georges Cuvier
EXPLANATION:
Charles Lyell, Scottish geologist whose version of geology came to be known as uniformitarianism, Lyell argued that the formation of Earth's crust took place through countless small changes occurring over vast periods of time, all according to known natural laws ,He influenced Darwin so deeply that Darwin envisioned evolution as a sort of biological uniformitarianism.
Alfred Russel Wallace, British humanist, naturalist, geographer, and social critic suggested that every species has come into existence coincident both in space and time with a pre-existing closely allied species’. Both Darwin and Wallace thought that their independently derived theories of natural selection were identical.Competition between individuals is slightly differed from Darwin because he thought that an inferior could coexist with a superior variety, though at a lower population size, until it was forced into extinction by an environmental deterioration.
Charles Darwin's theory of evolution which has been influenced by Wallace and Lyell theories, state evolution happens by natural selection ,stating that all species of organisms arise and develop through the natural selection of small, inherited variations that increase the individual's ability to compete, survive, and reproduce.
Modern biology regard the importance of Natural Selection as the only agent in evolution. Moreover theory is supported by evidence from a wide variety of scientific disciplines, including paleontology, geology, genetics and developmental biology. As it is believed Natural Selection works at the gene level. The basis of inheritance are the genes and all sorts of changes or characteristics must pass through the pathway of genotypes from parents to offsprings . Therefore modern biologist will support the views of Darwin, Lyell , and Wallace.
Georges Cuvier, 19th century, French naturalist ,developed his
theory of catastrophes. Accordingly, fossils show that animal and
plant species are destroyed time and again by deluges and other
natural cataclysms, and that new species evolve only after that.
Cuvier believed there was no evidence for evolution, but rather
evidence for cyclical creations and destructions of life forms by
global extinction events has met opposition from other notable
natural scientists like Darwin and Charles Lyell.
The differences was that all others believed that all organisms had a common ancestor while Cuvier believed different types of organism had been separately created. |
Due to all these we can conclude that the one who will disagree with other four on discussing concepts based on evolution will be GEORGES CUVIER
