Consider a process consisting of three resources. Assume there exists unlimited demand for the product.
• Resource 1 has a processing time of 6 minutes per unit.
• Resource 2 has a processing time of 3 minutes per unit.
• Resource 3 has a processing time of 5 minutes per unit.
The three resources are staffed by different workers individually. The flow diagram is shown above.
Round "Capacity of resource" to 3 decimal places.
a. What is the capacity of resource 2?
b. What is the bottleneck in the process?
c. What is the utilization of resource 2?
d How long does it take the process to produce 200 units starting with an empty system, assuming this is a worker-paced process?
ANSWER : Resource 1 takes 6 minutes to process 1 unit. Resource 2 takes 3 minutes to process 1 unit. Resource 3 takes 5 minutes to process 1 unit. a. Capacity of resource 2 (per hour) = Time of 1 hour / time needed for one unit = 60 min. / (3 min. / unit) = 20 units per hour (ANSWER). b. Bottleneck is that resource which takes maximum time per unit. In this case it is resource 1 which takes maximum time of 6 minutes per unit. So, bottleneck is resource 1. (ANSWER). c. As per bottleneck, capacity of the system is restricted to = 60/6 = 10 units per hour. Capacity of resource 2 is 20 units per hour, but it has to do 10 units only in one hour. Hence, Utilisation of resource 2 = 10/20 = 0.5 = 50% (ANSWER). d. System capacity is 10 units per hour. So, Time needed to produce 200 units = 200/10 = 20 hours (ANSWER).
