describe and explain the possible effect on your results of the
following experimental errors or vibrations. In each case, specify
the component(s) whose percentage(s) would be too high or too low
if:
a.)After adding DCM to Panacetin, you didnt stir the mixture long
enough.
b.) during the NaOH extraction you failed to mix the aqueous and
organic layers thoroughly
c.)you mistakenly extracted the DCM solution with 1M HCL rather
than 1M NaOH.
d) instead of using pH paper, you acidify the naoh solution using
litmus paper
a. ) If it wasn’t thoroughly stirred, then not all of the Panacetin aspirin and unknown substance would have been dissolved and there would have been aspirin and the unknown in with what was supposed to be just the sucrose. The sucrose would be too high and the others would be too low in percentage
b. ) This would have caused some of the aspirin and the unknown to still be inter mixed with each other and when separating, there would have been just aspirin and just unknown. Either one of these percentages could be higher and or lower
c. ) This would cause the aspirin to not form into its salt form so it wouldn’t migrate to theaqueous layer, it all would stay in the dichloromethane layer. If this happened, therewould be no aspirin extracted, all of it would be with the unknown which would causethe unknown to be at a higher percentage.
d. ) if it was brought to a neutral pH of 7, there would be no formation of a precipitate and therefore, no accumulation of the aspirin
