case study : assignment details below ( write a summary)
A number of people, including children, became ill several days after eating the same brand of a salami-type sausage. Rather than being cooked, the sausage was made by a fermentation process.
Symptoms included diarrhoea (often bloody), severe stomach cramps, nausea and headache. Some of the children became irritable and listless, and were taken to hospital. They were found to be suffering from haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). In spite of kidney dialysis and other treatment, one of the children died a week later from a blood clot on the brain. Some of the other children with HUS had only 50% normal kidney capacity and there was a risk of long-term damage.
Routine testing of samples from the children did not show up any pathogens. However, specialized tests showed up a toxin similar to Shigella toxin.
The goal of this assignment is to learn more about the Gram
negative rod family Enterobacteriaciae and the associated
disease.
When reading this case study, consider the following
(different case studies contain different
information):
1. patient history
2. site of infection
3. disease state and symptoms
4. specimen taken
5. media used in isolation of bacteria
6. general characteristics of the isolated bacteria (e.g., colony
morphology, Gram reaction, catalase reaction, oxidase reaction,
etc.)
In this assignment you are expected to:
Read the case study
Write and submit a short summary (paragraph or two, < 1 page double spaced) in which you indicate the bacterium and virulence factors (if applicable) likely responsible for the situation described in the case study. In this summary, you will also describe the reasoning process you used to make the identification. For example, Borrelia burgdorferi infections may result from a tick bite and infections are more common in upstate New York. Symptoms associated with B. burgdorferi include a bullseye rash.
In this case Study, we will discuss about Shigella toxin released by E.coli Cells or Esc herichia coli are bacteria found in a gut and faeces of people and animals. Children who are affected by this is because of eating of same brand of a salami-type sausage leads to Hemolytic-uremic syndrome first described by Gasser , which affect the digestive system some symtoms are diarrhoea (often bloody),stomach cramps, nausea and headache. some of the children became irritable, destruction of RBCs, and Law Platelet count this disease is mainly Due to Contaminated Food, water supply.
The Onset of Action of (HUS) is 5-10 days of diarrhoea and low urine output. People with this infection may develop kidney failure and anaemia and his is called haemolytic uraemic syndrome .Various types of E. coli are harmless, but some, such as Shiga, produce toxins which can lead to damage of the digestive system. 80 % Childrens are at greatest risk.People with this infection may develop kidney failure and anaemia and his is called haemolytic uraemic syndrome
