Characteristics of RNA and DNA virus:

  • RNA viruses are single-stranded: During RNA transcription, only one strand is transcribed.
  • RNA viruses replicate in the cytoplasm: Single-stranded RNA viruses have their genome directly translated as if it were mRNA, with host ribosomes in cytoplasm translating it into a single protein which is modified by the host and viral proteins to form the various proteins needed for replication.
  • DNA viruses are double-stranded:
  • DNA viruses replicate in the nucleus: Double-stranded DNA viruses usually enter the host nucleus for replication because they require host cell polymerases to replicate their genome.
