Home Remedies for Sleep Apnea Without CPAP
Sleep apnea is when you have a pause
in your breathing or very shallow breaths while you sleep due to
constricted airways. The pauses can last anywhere from a few
seconds to minutes. Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that causes
you to have a disrupted sleeping pattern leading to fatigue during
the day.
There are some home remedies to
prevent sleep apnea:
- Throat Exercise:
Facilitate proper airflow through your nose by blowing up a balloon
as much as possible using deep breaths. Try not to take the balloon
out of your mouth between breaths. Repeat five times daily to
improve airflow. Of course, home remedies for sleep apnea aren’t
always the right fix.
- Honey: It has
anti-inflammatory properties, which reduce swelling around the
throat area. It also helps with snoring because it acts as a
lubricant for the throat. To use it in home remedies for sleep
apnea, add a tablespoon of honey to a glass of warm water and drink
it before going to bed.
- Cinnamon: This is
another possible form of treatment for sleep apnea. The spice is
said to have sedative properties and help with breathing problems.
Add cinnamon powder to a glass of water and drink daily.
- Garlic: Garlic is
another potential sleep apnea treatment without CPAP. Garlic has
anti-inflammatory properties and it alleviates large tonsils,
opening up the airways more for easier breathing. Eat two to three
cloves of garlic a day followed by a glass of water. Also, try
adding more garlic to your daily meals.
- Lavender: Lavender
may help cure sleep apnea by preventing muscle obstruction in the
throat. It naturally has a soothing, sedative, and calming nature.
Put a few drops of lavender oil on a towel and put it under your
pillow while you sleep. Or, you could add it to boiling water and
inhale the steam.
- Chamomile:
Chamomile contains chemical compounds that can relax muscles and
nerves and cause sedation thus increasing sleepiness. Drink a glass
of water with chamomile before bed. Add 2 tablespoons to hot water
and let it steep for five minutes.
- Peppermint:
Another CPAP alternative treatment for sleep apnea is peppermint.
This herb has anti-inflammatory properties and also prevents
snoring. Gargle with a mixture of water and a few drops of
peppermint oil before going to bed. Also, try drinking peppermint
tea throughout the day.
- Epsom salt bath:
An Epsom salt bath before bed can relax the muscles and create a
feeling of well-being that could then lead to a more comfortable
and satisfying night’s sleep. Add Epsom salts to a warm bath and
soak for 20 minutes. It’s one of the most relaxing home remedies
for sleep apnea.
- Warm turmeric
milk: Milk promotes sleep, and turmeric has
anti-inflammatory properties. It works to reduce inflammation in
the respiratory system for easier breathing during sleep. Boil one
teaspoon of turmeric powder and one cup of milk. Allow the mixture
to cool and drink it 30 minutes before bed.
