INTERACTION 1: Burdocks are a group of weeds and dispersal of their seeds is critical to their life cycle. Their seeds have spines with hooks that allow them to be picked up by the fur of animals passing by. The spines do not hurt the animals they attach to.

INTERACTION 2: Wax moths live in the nests of honeybees. Their larvae eat the stored honey of the bees, as well as the larvae of workers and reproductive honeybees. The adults mate and disperse to lay eggs in new nests.

INTERACTION 3: Spider crabs live in shallow areas of the ocean floor, and greenish-brown algae lives on the crabs' backs, making the crabs blend in with their environment, and unnoticeable to predators. The algae gets a good place to live, and the crab gets camouflage.

Which of the above interactions is a mutualism?

Expert Solution

Mutualism is a type of relation ship in which both the species are benefitted and they work together. The examples are pollination by bees where the bees get the nectar and and the flower gets pollinated when the bees sit on the flower the pollen gets attached and dispersed.

1)In the first case there is no mutualism but of commensalism in which one species is benefitted and one species is neither harmed nor benefitted ie the spiens do not harm the animals carrying them.

2)The second example is the one in which one species is harmed and one is benefitted ie is not the case of the mutualism and is an example of damage caused by the moths on the hives by consuming the stored honey.

3) The third example is the one in which the algae gets a good place to live and the crab gets the camoulflage so both the species are benefitted so this is clearly the case of the mutualism.

So the right answer is Interaction3
