Mrs McMclelland is 43 years old and has two children. She has been receiving chemotherapy treatment for a year due to breast cancer. Her hair was lost as a result of chemotherapy treatment. In the night shift, nurse hears crying sound from Mrs. McClelland’s room and goes to her room.
Nurse: What's wrong with you Mrs. McMclelland? What happened? Why are you crying? Look… you burn yourself out.
Mrs McMclelland: Nothing.
Nurse: Ohh..poor…did you miss your children?
Mrs McMclelland: Yes..but not for that… Look at my hair. They got sparse and spilled. I became an ugly woman. When this is going to end, I am tired of chemotherapy…
(she continues to cry).
Nurse: Don't worry, at least you haven't lost your breast.
Mrs McMclelland: You do not understand. Leave me alone.
Nurse: No, I would definitely not leave you alone in this state. Let's go to the nurse room.
Mrs McMclelland: I can't come, I want to stay alone.
a) Assess the attitude of the nurse in the case given above? What are her right or wrong behaviors? Write.

a)Nurse is having positive attitude towards the patient.

  • Positive attitude of the nurse effect behaviour, quality of care and health outcomes of patient.

Right behaviour:

  • She was concerned about the family members (children)of the patient.
  • She did not leave the patient alone and asked her to come to nurses room.

Wrong behaviour :

  • She commented that the patient had lost her hair and atleast she haven't lost her breast.

b)If i was the nurse in that situation:

  • I will try to understand and empathize with her grief.
  • I will be with her and try to counsel her regarding the use of chemotherapy inspite of side effects like lose of hair etc
  • I will advise her to find some activities that help her to relax.
  • I will try to deviate her from her sadness by discussing about her children ,family members etc
  • I will tell her that all her side effects will get subsided gradually after stopping chemotherapy and make her to take adequate rest and sleep
