In this weeks chapter reading we discussed a lot of issues in relation the blood, and the various parts that make up the blood. Some of the main discussions involved, erythrocytes, leukocytes and thrombocytes. There are many disorders of the blood that can come about from an improper balance of body fluid composition. Homeostasis is where our body operates at its full potential, when things are balanced. In the case of erythrocytes, anemia is a disorder that symbolizes the decrease in the amount of red blood cells within the blood. This condition is a sign of other disorders with varying symptoms associated with it, but these can be debilitating symptoms such as chest pain, heart failure and anorexia. Being that red blood cells contain hemoglobin which transport oxygen, anemia allows for inadequate oxygen consumption from the various parts of the body which require it. On the other token, in an excess amount of cells, specifically white blood cells, called leukocytosis is a sign of general infection. Very high levels of WBC's can give indications of potential sepsis, a very serious life threatening systemic infection. In the case of mononucleosis, the WBC's are at a very high level and are abnormal. Also accompanying this is other signs and symptoms such as an enlarged spleen which has the potential to ruptur, and abnormal liver functions. The increase or decrease in any major component os the blood is a sign of a disorder, infection or congenital effects that may require active treatment in a facility. In speaking metaphorically, relating to the blood and vessels to a city would be easy to imagine. The roads are full of cars which transport people each day to work, where they contribute to the society, and then return home to get refreshed. These are the erythrocytes or red blood cells. The cops that patrol the streets and take the bad guys to jail, or shoot them, resemble the white blood cells or leukocytes. The transportation and construction people would in my opinion would be the thrombocytes or platelets. These can shut down a lane and clog traffic (thrombosis) if they need to stop and fill in a pot hole or fix a road. Sometimes, they can be there a long time if budgets are cut, thus a new budget plan would have to be introduced, this would be your anticoagulant metaphor.
