As a result, Companies are exposed to foreign currency translation gains and losses. Revenues and expenses of all foreign operations are translated into Canadian dollars at the foreign currency exchange rates that approximate the rates in effect at the dates when such items are recognized. Since fiscal 2016, company entered into derivative instruments in the form of forward contracts to manage the majority of their current and anticipated exposure to fluctuations in the U.S. dollar, euro, British Pound sterling and Swiss franc exchange rates for revenues and purchases. Beginning in fiscal 2017, certain foreign exchange forward contracts have been designated and accounted for as cash flow hedge

The company manage their exposure to foreign currency risk by entering into foreign exchange forward contracts. Management forecasts its net cash flows in foreign currency using expected revenue from orders it receives for future periods. The unrealized gains and losses on these contracts are recognized in net income from the date of inception of the contract, while the cash flows to which the derivatives related are not realized until the contract settles. Management believes that reflecting these adjustments in the period in which the net cash flows will occur is more appropriate.
