Chapter 03, Problem 23

As preparation for this problem, review Conceptual Example 10. The drawing shows two planes each dropping an empty fuel tank. At the moment of release each plane has the same speed of 145 m/s, and each tank is at the same height of 3.18 km above the ground. Although the speeds are the same, the velocities are different at the instant of release, because one plane is flying at an angle of 15.0° above the horizontal and the other is flying at an angle of 15.0° below the horizontal. Find the (a) magnitude and (b) direction of the velocity with which the fuel tank hits the ground if it is from plane A. Find the (c) magnitude and (d) direction of the velocity with which the fuel tank hits the ground if it is from plane B. In each part, give the direction as a positive angle with respect to the horizontal.

As preparation for this problem, review Conceptual Example 9. From the top of a cliff overlooking a lake, a person throws two stones, as shown in the drawing. The cliff is 35.0 m high. The two stones described have identical initial speeds of v0 = 17.6 m/s and are thrown at an angle θ = 31.3 °, one below the horizontal and one above the horizontal. What is the distance between the points where the stones strike the water? Neglect...

Chapter 05, Problem 30 (Vector Drawing) The drawing shows a baggage carousel at an airport. Your suitcase has not slid all the way down the slope and is going around at a constant speed on a circle (r = 11.0 m) as the carousel turns. The coefficient of static friction between the suitcase and the carousel is 0.760, and the angle θ in the drawing is 35.0°. (a) Draw the free-body diagram showing the forces that act on the suitcase....

1. Before working this problem, review Conceptual Example 14. A pellet gun is fired straight downward from the edge of a cliff that is 12 m above the ground. The pellet strikes the ground with a speed of 28 m/s. How far above the cliff edge would the pellet have gone had the gun been fired straight upward? _______________________ m 2.  An astronaut on a distant planet wants to determine its acceleration due to gravity. Chapter 6.1 review questions, #23 part B. In order to find the probability of a fourth or fifth live birth, I have to multiple the probability of a fourth birth and the probability of a fifth birth. This would be 0.096 x 0.047. My calculator is saying the answer is 0.004512. However, Chegg textbook solutions and the book says the answer is 0.143, which would be the two probabilities being added together. I'm not sure which is wrong; is the...
