Yes, sensor and actuator location flexiblity is important for
observation and control. The main objective of sensor is to detect
motion of actuator and communicate with rest of system. The
position and orientation of sensors are vital for sensing actuator
motion from required angle, distance, speed and with minimum
possible error. Flexiblity between sensor and actuator is noting
but maximum coverage with minimum errors by sensor from its
location at all times. While deciding sensor location , all
actuator actions should be considered.
Consider example of alarm system with infrared lights. The light
position must be such that it covers maximum area with minimum
chances of entry for burglar (as in movies!). The sensors should be
located such that despite failure of few sensors, system works
efficiently. The other external issues for sensor location may be
environmental like rain, snow or high solar glair, reach of
childrens/pets etc which can damage system.
