A scuba tank, when fully submerged, displaces 15.7 liters of seawater. The tank has a total mass of 14 kg when empty; when full, it contains 3 kg of air. a) If you release the full (from from a spot underneath the surface of the ocean, does it sink, remain at that spot, or rise to the surface? Explain. b) If the tank is initially 2 m below the ocean surface, determine the pressure that the ocean water exerts on it there.

Solutions

Expert Solution

a) Tank weight = 14 * 9.8

                           = 137.2 N

     Air weight = 3 * 9.8

                       = 29.4 N

=> total weight =   137.2 +   29.4

                         = 166.6 N

=>   Buoyant force = 0.0157 * 1025 * 9.8 = 157.706 N

Thus, it will sink .

b)   the pressure that the ocean water exerts on it there =   rho * g * h

                                                                                         = 1025 * 9.8 * 2

                                                                                        = 20090 Pa

A farmer has a mixing tank of capacity 1200 liters which she half-filled with pure, fresh water. She pumps into the tank a concentrated liquid fertilizer (CLF) at rate 3 liters/minute, containing 1/3 ∼ 0.333 kg/liter of nitrate (a salt of nitric acid). In addition, she pours the dry powder fertilizer (DPF, the same chemical as a soluble powder) at rate 1/12 = 0.08333 kg/min in the tank; her aim is to get a right solution concentration 0.12kg/liter for the...

A parallel-plate capacitor has capacitance C = 15.7 pF when the volume between the plates is filled with air. The plates are circular, with radius 2.50 cm. The capacitor is connected to a battery and a charge of magnitude 28.0 pC goes into each plate. With the capacitor still connected to the battery, a slab of dielectric is inserted between the plates, completely filling the space between the plates. After the dielectric has been inserted, the charge on each plate...

When a sample of MegaCaff that weighs 0.5 g and has a total surface area of 0.25 m2 was dissolved in water for 2 minutes, the dissolution rate constant (k) was found to be 0.01 cm/min. The saturation solubility is known to be 3.2 x 10-3 g/mL.
