We saw that risk management involves playing the devil’s advocate and asking, “What could go wrong?” Creating scenarios and thinking through situations will help you understand the nature of the risk better. This is your exercise for the week.
Class: Risk Management in Healthcare Settings
Create three fictional incidents for the risk area psychiatry. Write about each scenario in not more than 2 pages. Include the following information about each scenario: 1.suicide 2.bipolar 3. depression
Details of the incident—What, where, when, and who?
Explain the cause—How and why?
Risk mamagement means, trying to avoid issues in future. For example, if I know my neighbor is suddenly having alcohol daily,I'll try and get in touch with him, talk to him, counsel him on why we should avoid alcohol etc so that he's not at a risk of being a alcoholic in future.
Risk management involves 5 steps:
1) Identifying the risk.
2) Once identified, more information about the risk, analysing everything about the risk.
3) Evaluate, rate the risk say on a scale of 0 to 10, 0 being the lowest and 10 the highest risk.
4) Work on avoiding the risk, treating the risk.
5) Finally, monitoring and reviewing the work done to reduce the effects of the risk.
Given in the question is 3 areas, suicide, bipolar and depression.
1) Suicide: There is a girl in the classroom who suddenly have turned quiet. The other day, a friend noticed her buying ropes, when asked why she needed one, she couldn't answer. Parents too heard her say, 'I won't trouble you much in a few days' recently.
The above fictional incident shows the girl is planning a suicide. Nobody simply buys ropes, blades etc or say they won't bother much etc.
2) Bipolar: A person going through bipolar disorder may experience and show intense episodes of mood swings ranging from depressive low to maniac high.
A young guy, say in his 30s is seen extremely happy at times where he greets the entire office with over enthusiasm, he would even greet someone he barely knows. And suddenly, he becomes low by evening, so much that he may cry, feel helpless, miserably sad, stuck at workplace.
3) Depression: A pregnant lady, suddenly feel overwhelmed for every other thing. The sudden change in body, hormones, food habits and a few physical limitations which pregnancy brings make her feel less important. She clearly shows her emotions by reducing the contact, avoiding group meetings, feeling she is good for nothing. She rarely smiles. Often spends time alone till loneliness is her only friend. Mornings are difficult for her, so are nights. She sleeps the day off.
