Explain ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). How is F test for differences among more than two means used in this case to test a hypothesis? Give an example.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used to find out statistical models and their associated estimation procedures i.e. "variation" among and between groups used to analyze the differences among group means in a sample.

ANOVA is used two compare the means of two or more groups.

ANOVA is the extension of t test.

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) can determine whether the means of three or more groups are different. ANOVA uses F-tests to statistically test the equality of means.

F test =

We use the F-test to determine whether group means are equal, it’s just a matter of including the correct variances in the ratio. In one-way ANOVA, the F-statistic is this ratio test can also be extended to check whether the means of three or more groups are different or not (ANOVA F-test). It is conceptually similar to multiple two-sample t-tests.

e.g

Suppose we want test difference in IQ score by country and age .We use the ANOVA for interaction between two independent variable.

Explain what interaction means in two-factor analysis of variance. Your explanation needs to include how an interaction differs from main effect. In particular, how the interpretation of main effect differs when there is no interaction present and when there is an interaction present.

To investigate this, an experimenter split 14 recent parolees into "high skill and self-esteem" and "low skill and self-esteem" groups. Three months later, employers were asked to rate each parolee’s job performance on a standard test that gives ratings from 1 to 10, with 10 being the highest. The following ratings...

A researcher conducts an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test looking at the effect of different treatment program options (therapy, education and reentry services) and finds that drug use levels vary significantly among between the participants in each of these three groups. For example, the therapy group had lowest amount of drug use (mean=2.0), the education group had the highest (mean=7.0) and the reentry services group was in the middle (mean=6.0). The researcher follows the steps to conduct an ANOVA appropropriately....
