Cam and follower are mechanical devices to transmit motion. In the cam and follower, the cam rotates at a specific rate and transmits the signal to a follower by direct contact. Here the driver is a cam and driven is a follower. In cam follower pair, can normally rotate, and follower follows the translation according to cam shape.

Cam is profile shaped mounted on a rotating shaft and according to the shape of cam follower complete the oscillation.

Cam may be in different shape Disc type Cam, cylindrical cam, wedge cam, conjugate cam, spherical cam, globoid cam.

Types of the follower as a knife-edge follower, roller follower, flat follower, spherical followers, offset followers.

Type of motion or movement of the follower as

1. Dwell-rise-dwell-return- dwell motion

2. Dwell-rise-return-dwell motion

3. Rise-return-rise

4. Dwell-rise-dwell.

Applications

1. Used in I.C. engines to close and open the intake and outlet valve of the engine combustion chamber.

2. Automated types of machines can, and followers have used parts.

3. Used in the hydraulic system.

4. In printing machinery.

5. Automatic lathe machines.

6. Blacksmith's punching machines.

Advantages

Cam and followers are fast and accurate machining pair; machines can run continuously, material wearing and vibration causes are minimum, used in machine components regardless of shapes and size if fixing nut, material saving mechanism, more efficient compare to other contact bearing mechanism.
