1.) Similarities between coaching and mentoring

  • Both of them involves giving advice to someone.
  • Both of them requires experience in helping someone.
  • Both deal with personal growth of learner.

Differences between Coaching and Mentoring

  • Coaching is more of a formal nature than Mentoring. Mentoring is less formal in nature
  • Coach has more of a general knowknowledge whereas mentors have detailed knowledge about topics or organization.
  • Coaching contract is relatively for a short term than that of Mentoring. Coaching contracts is for 4 to 12 months whereas Mentoring contract is generally for 3 to 5 years.

Coaching is used when

  • Your company is introducing a new system so as to teach employees how to use it.
  • You want to make your emoloyees more competent and make them learn efficient methods.

Mentoring is used when

  • You want to create new leaders.
  • Making employee ready for future projects as leaders.
  • Succession planning.

3 ) An organization decides to use On the job Training because through this employee can face the challenges which occur during performance of the job. It is better than to use dummy machinery or plant. An experience employee teaches or instructs the employee.

Advantages of On the job Training Method​​​​​​​

  • It is an economical way of training as you don't need to spend on classeoom training
  • It is simpler as employee learn through working. He takes part in expecting projects.
  • Employee is productive from beginning as he is not off the job while training.

Disadvantages:

  • It is a rushed process as employer wants employee to be productive from day one.
  • It might create distubance for other workers if the jobs are interconnected.
  • It leads to wastage as while on training employee isn't efficient.
  • Risk of Accidents if there are complex machines which are to ne handled .

6 ) Four steps of Job instruction Training

  • Preparation: First employees must know the basics of organization, it's goals, values, it's background, history so that he can feel atteched to the company.
  • Instruction: The instructor performs the task and explain the employee how to proceed by explaining him each step.
  • Hand-on : Now the employees try to do the task themselves and instructor watches over him and let the employee think how to handle any problem and then instruct him
  • Follow up: In this stage employee and instructor discuss any weak points or quesquestions and feedback is gathered in this stage.

​​​​​​​You can train someone to drive car or fix a flat tire by using job instruction method.

First you need to tell them all about car and its features. Tell them where everything is placed and traffic rules and all whichbis there to know about the car and it's functioning.

Second, Instructor will demonstrate by driving the car himself and explaining how is break applied or how you use gear and all.

Thirdly the learner will try to drive car himself and instructor watching over him and telling him when he is mistaking.

Fourthly Instructor and learner will ask questions and gather feedback. And learner will practice until he becomes perfect.

9) Stretch Assignment

Stretch assignment is basically a task or job for which employees doesn't have appropriate or sufficient knowledge and it is challenging to perform the task and it stretches him and deveolps him. It is an on the job training method as employees are assigned task while they are on their job.

Difference between stretch assignment and job rotation

When an employee is transferred to a temporary job for a fixed period of time either in the same department or in totally different department and asked to do the different job, it is known as job rotation. Job rotation allows the employee to acquire new skills. In stretch assignment, employee is only assigned a different and challenging task but in Job rotation employee is transferred to a whole new job for a fixed period of time.

So stretch assignment is short term in nature than Job rotation.
