Solve the following problems. Report the final answers with proper units and the correct number of significant digits. Please how ALL work, including dimensional analysis setups.

1.The metabolic oxidation of glucose, C6H12O6, in our bodies producesCO2, which is expelled from our lungs as a gas:

C6H12O6 (aq) + 6O2 (g)? 6CO2 (g) + 6H2O (l)

Calculate the volume of CO2 produced at body temperature (37°C) and 0.970 atm when 24.5 g of glucose is consumed in this reaction.

R = 0.0821 L·atm/mol·K

2. A 2.50L flask is filled with air at 2.00 atm. What size flask is needed to hold this much air at 735 torr?

1 atm = 760 torr

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ans 1 :

Number of mole of glucose = 24.5 / 180.156 = 0.1359 mol

1 mol glucose makes 6 mol CO2

so 0.1359 mol of glucose will make : 0.1359 x 6 = 0.816 mol of CO2

using ideal gas law , pV = nRT

T = 37 C = 310.15 K

0.970 x V = 0.816 x 0.0821 x 310.15

V = 21.4 L

Ans 2 :

735 torr = 760 / 735 = 0.967105 atm

using the relation :

p1 V1 = p2 V2

2.00 x 2.50 = 0.967105 x V2

V2 = 5.17 L
