A requirement to sense glass bottles leaving an automatic washer on a production line conveyor belt has been notified to you. The output from the sensor is to be of binary form, i.e. logical 1 when the part is present and logical 0 when no part is present. It is also necessary to ensure that a change of sensor state occurs closer to the sensor when a bottle approaches than when it moves away. The switching distance will lie between 5 and 20 mm. The production line is for food products and the environment is clean and maintained at a temperature of 15°C. Bottles will pass the sensor at the rate of 10 every second. There is no requirement for protection from contact with objects but it must be proof against water drips.

(a) Recommend a suitable sensor and justify your recommendation. Sketch a diagram that shows the functional blocks within the sensor and explain each function.

(b) Would the recommended sensor be suitable if a change was made from glass to plastic bottles?

The production line at the Heinz ketchup factory is calibrated to fill bottles of ketchup with no more than 24 ounces of ketchup in each bottle. We certainly do not want ketchup to spill onto the assembly line equipment; that would create a mess. In order to test how well our machinery is working, a sample of 70 bottles are randomly selected from a days production of filled ketchup bottles and the contents of each bottle are measured. The sample...

Your production line has an automatic scanner to detect defects. In recent production, 3% of items have been defective. Given that an item is defective, the scanner has an 90% chance of identifying it as defective. Of the non-defective items, the scanner has a 95% chance of identifying it correctly as non-defective. Given that the scanner identifies a part as defective, find the conditional probability that the part is truly defective.
