Shipping time. An internet company claims that 90% of its orders are shipped within two days.  Suppose that last month they received 4000 orders.  A consumer group questioning the claim took a random sample of 200 orders and found that 168 were shipped within 2 days.  Is this strong enough evidence to conclude that less than 90% of all orders received were shipped within two days?  Use a significance level of 5%. Then, qualify your findings to a range of percentages.

A)  Identify problem type:  mean or proportion?  one population or two?

Confidence Interval or Hypothesis Test? (most will ask for both to be performed)

      B)  Write a sentence or delineate the defining parameters and statistics. (include its symbol; n = numbers; population, sample, etc as you have done previously)

C)    Write the symbol for the sample estimate and the formula for the SE of the sample estimate.

D) Complete the necessary calculations to answer the question.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A)

proportion

one population

Hypothesis Test

B)

n = 200, N = 4000, x = 168

C)

Since

So it is not necessary to apply the finite population correction factor.

---------------------

C-D)

The sample estimate is

The standard error is

SE = 0.0212

Conclusion:  There is strong enough evidence to conclude that less than 90% of all orders received were shipped within two days.

A catalog sales company promises to deliver orders placed on the Internet within 3 days. Follow-up calls to a few randomly selected customers show that a 90% confidence interval for the proportion of all orders that arrive on time is 88% ±4%. What does this mean? Are the conclusions below correct? Explain. a) Between 84% and 92% of all orders arrive on time. b) 90% of all random samples of customers will show that 88% of orders arrive on time....

2. Insurance Company An insurance company states that 90% of its claims are settled within 30 days. A consumer group selected a random sample of 75 of the company's claims to test this statement. If the consumer group found that 55 of the claims were settled within 30 days, do they have sufficient reason to support their contention that fewer than 90% of the claims are settled within 30 days? 4) (1 point) An insurance company states that at least 85% of its claims are settled within 30 days. A consumer group selected a random sample of 66 of the company's claims to test this statement. They found that 55 of the claims were settled within 30 days. Does the consumer group have evidence to disbelieve the insurance company's claim? 1. Write the hypotheses to test if the rate of claims settled within 30 days is less than 85%. H0H0:...

Suppose an airline claims that its flights are consistently on time. It claims that the average delay is so consistent that the standard deviation is no more than 12.25 minutes. Doubting this claim, a disgruntled traveler calculates the delays for his next 25 flights. The standard deviation for his next 25 flights is 15 minutes. Test at the 5% significance level. Calculate the test statistic. Round to two decimal places. What are the degrees of freedom? What is the p-value?...
