How is the Russian empire different?
The Russian empire different from the Western Empires as the
British, French, German, Dutch, Spanish, and Portuguese Empires all
were linked by sea to their colonies while the Russian empire was
linked by land. As a way of expressing their dominance, the Russian
authorities forced the natives for tribute, whereas the Western
European empires used the slave system, giving the slaves very
minimal rights. Many Russian natives were Russified and adopted the
language, and converted to Christianity. Also, the Russian natives
were given a degree of protection from outside invaders while not
being subject to harsh conditions. In contrast, the Native
Americans in the Western European Empire were driven out and
eradicated. They were often abused and starved to death with
terrible sicknesses. Furthermore, the Russian and Western European
empires used different methods of traveling to their destined
territories. The Russians entered adjacent territories with which
they long interacted and did so at the same time that a modern
Russian state was taking shape. In contrast, the Western European
empires had conquered and colonized the New World, an ocean away
and wholly unknown to them from a distance.
The Russian and European shared many differences including the ways
they dealt with their empires during the early modern era.
