Melinda Gates Interview on Agricultural Transformation in Africa

Melinda Gates in her interview on agricultural transformation in Africa states that lot of initiatives for green revolution did not really come to Africa. If investments are done on these green revolution initiatives and put a small holder farmer as a center for that particularly women. Because majority of the farmers are women. Once the women are made center to the green revolution initiatives and provide them with innovative tools, they can live their family up and get a situation of self-sufficiency. They will also be able to get out of the trap of hunger. This is what they are actually trying to do with the African green revolution. They focus on small land owners because the majority of the African farmers are small holder farmers holding approximately 2 acres of land and these farmers are far connected to the system. If they are put them up to the entire system and give them good inputs such as seeds that help them in the drought times that provides them more yield which will transform the farm for them. This is what Melinda Gates are really trying to do for Africa. The farmers are connected to the system and trainings are provided about the seeds and getting more yield. Once they get a formal education and training and start to produce more yields, they are next connected to a co-operative for savings. Once the farmers pass through all the value change in the market, there is a total transformation in the lives of the African farmers.

Bill Gates Thinks Chickens Could Alleviate Poverty In Africa.

Bill Gates states that distribution of chickens to the sub-Saharan Africa to alleviate poverty would definitely improve the income of the people who earn less than US$2 a day. Gates also suggests that chickens are less expensive to take care off such as cheap vaccines and no special feeds. He also states that chickens are a good investment as they have a good price in the market place. The market price of chickens is US$5 and they reproduce frequently. Woman who raises a flock of chickens would be able to generate more than US$1000 per year. At the same time they can combat the malnutrition and become an earner for the family.
