What are the different forms of contraception and how do they work (e.g., what stage of the conception process do they target), what are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each type?
Different forms of contraception are:
1. long-acting reversible contraception, such as the implant or
intrauterine device (IUD): Long-acting reversible contraception
(LARC) is a contraceptive that lasts for a long time.
2. hormonal contraception, such as the pill or the Depo Provera
injection: These are contraceptives that use hormones to prevent
pregnancy. You take one pill each day. The pill is more than 99%
effective at preventing pregnancy if you take it correctly.
3. barrier methods, such as condoms: Barrier methods stop sperm
from entering the vagina. Condoms protect against sexually
transmissible infections (STIs) as well as unintended
pregnancy.
4. emergency contraception
5. fertility awareness: Fertility awareness is learning the signs
of fertility in your menstrual cycle to help you plan or avoid a
pregnancy.
6. permanent contraception, such as vasectomy and tubal ligation:
Permanent contraception, sometimes called sterilization, prevents
all future pregnancies. It is very difficult or impossible to
reverse. For males it is vasectomy and for females, it is tubal
ligation.
