1) Key Learning Points & Reflection:

Marriott International is facing challenge with regards to loosing their workforce. With automtion introduced in the service industry, Employees feel they will losse the job. As a result Employees are also looking at alternate options and this has created shortage of skilled manpower. Company also feels it has raised questions in Industry about Marriott not handling their management policy and practices efficiently and effectively. To deal with this situation, Marriott International proposes to adopt an effective organizational change model which in long run will help Company deal with such situations.

2) How can Marriott International be more proactive to respond to external change?

To deal with this situation, Marriott International can develop a more people-centric organization. To achieve this objective they can adopt following practices:

1. Cultivate humble and “human” leaders: Creating a place of work where employees work more as a Team and in process create a humble Leader. A humble leader in an Organisation  drives loyalty, which increases effort and retention. These increases lead to better service and an inspired customer experience, which drives revenue.

2. Invest in your people’s growth and wellbeing: Marriott should work towards developing programs that support employee success. New Employees should be given proper training and a competitive environment. This helps in gaining new skills and expertise, and grow their careers. Create a " holistic employee well-being program" .

3. When people feel valued and cared for, they do their work with stronger intrinsic motivation, a deeper sense of meaning, and a greater level of engagement.

3. To what extend Marriott International could have handled things better in the past? Example: What can Marriott International did to prevent the strike?

Strike mainly happened due to following reasons : job security, workload, wages and benefits and workload . Most the striking employees of hotel were from different locations. Workers could not run their family from working at Marriott as different places had different challenges. Many use to do different jobs also while working at Marriott to support their families.

To prevent these above mentioned three pints are very important. In services Industry skilled manpower are the key assets in hotel industry. A strong socail employee welfare program, employee centric oriented work culture and a good leader will help Employee to develop a strong sense of commitment towards the Organisation.

4. What extend Marriott International can communicate in a different way, the communication style of Marriott International to its employees?

Communication is important for the smooth running of any organisation. It allows for the clarification of messages up and down as well as across an Organisation. Marriott International has to adopt the practise of The PEOPLE FIRST philosophy in their work culture. It is manifested in multiple ways, whether it is the head of the hotel spearheading the "Take Care" well-being program or the warm gestures around employees' personal occasions. Employees participate in critical issues, such as the action planning of the survey results or addressing guest concerns which empowers them to be a better leader tomorrow. It is important to focus on the development of human resource by incorporating Cross Cultural Business Ethics, formulation of Employee welfare and benefits and managing expectations. All these should be clearly communicated from Management to the Employees to bring out the best in them.

5. Based on the Proposed Solution, how different it will be compared to what Marriott International has done? Example: Things Marriott International had done to prevent/stop the strike

As per a survey, today 85% of the Employees at Marriott International say it's a great place to work. And People say so as they feel there is a good work life balance along with host of new benefits that are Employee centric. Managing and Building Teams with a Culturally Diverse Workforce, Performance Management, Cross Cultural training, creating International Managers, Programs for employee welfare, Cross Cultural Business Ethics and International Sustainability Programs and timley review of Service Policies, Practices and Procedures are some fo the steps that Marriott Management has taken to stop situations like Employee strike and creating more satisfied employees.

Steps would be same as mentioned in point no 5.

7. What are some of the constraints of Marriott International in terms of the feasibility of the Proposed Solution?

I think the biggest challenge for the Company would be to built trust in their Employees as they went about bringing positive reforms in their Organisation. It must have been a tough challenge for the Organisation brining in a slew of reforms which can cost lot of money to Management with just a hope that one day it will create a better organisation. Another big challege was talking with associates on the front line at every location and ensuring the new guidelines are strictly followed. This calls for patience and conviction.

Today, Marriott works with a motto of "Take care of your employees, they'll take care of your customers and the customers will keep coming back again and again."
