An electron has spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum.
For the 3.00 d electron in scandium, what percent of its total orbital angular momentum is its spin angular momentum in the z direction?
Here is what I solved before, please modify the figures as per your question. Please let me know if you have further questions. Ifthis helps then kindly rate 5-stars.
An electron has spin angular momentum and orbital angular momentum.
For the 5.00 d electron in scandium, what percent of its total orbital angular momentum is its spin angular momentum in the z direction?
Electronic configuration is [Ar] 3d^1 4s^2....
for the 3d state n=3.......
orbital angular momentum L = sqrt[L(L+1)] =sqrt[(2*3)] = 2.45 .....
here only one electron so it's spin quantum number s = (1/2)
spin angular momentum S = sqrt[s(s+1)] = sqrt(1/2)(3/2)] = 0.866....
percentage is( spin angular momentum /orbital angular momentum )*100 = (0.866/2.45)*100 = 35.34 %
