Given Keq for the top reaction (below), calculate Keq for the reaction shown below it.

2 HBr <--> H2 + Br2                            Keq = 2.0*10^-19

4 H2 + 4 Br2 <--> 8 HBr                      Keq = ?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Answer – Given, reaction with Keq value as follow –

2 HBr <------> H2 + Br2            Keq1 = 2.0*10-19 …..1

We need to calculate the Keq for the following reaction number 2 from the above reaction number 1.

4 H2 + 4 Br2 <-----> 8 HBr       Keq2 = ? ….2

The reaction 2 is reverse reaction of reaction 1 and there is also multiply by 4, so when we reverse the reaction then there is Keq gets inverse and when we multiply then its gets exponent, like here we multiply by 4, so the original Keq gets ratio to 4. So Keq for second reaction is

4 H2 + 4 Br2 <-----> 8 HBr       Keq2 = 1/(Keq1)4

                                                           = 1 / (2.0*10-19)4

                                                           = 6.25*1074
