Expert Solution

Hi,

Hope you are doing well.

An object falling through a fluid will reach terminal velocity when the net forces on the object becomes zero.

In an oil drop experiment, Forces acting on the oil drop are:

  1. Weight of the oil drop (W=mg) acting downwards.
  2. Force due to electric field (FE) acting upwards.

m - mass of the oil drop.

g- acceleration due to gravity.

Electric force on the oil drop is given by:

Hence, when the oil drop reaches terminal velocity

In Millikan’s oil-drop experiment, one looks at a small oil drop held motionless between two plates. Take the voltage between the plates to be 2033 V, and the plate separation to be 2.00 cm. The oil drop (of density 0.81 g/cm3) has a diameter of 2.9 x 10-6m. Find the charge on the drop, in terms of electron units. You need to round your answer to the nearest integer.
Some of Millikan’s oil-drop data are shown below. The measured quantities were not actual charges on oil drops but were proportional to these charges.

The following observations were made for a series of five oil drops in an experiment similar to Millikan’s (see Figure 2-8). Click to launch the animation The Millikan oil drop experiment was a direct and convincing experiment for the measurement of the charge on a single electron. Millikan performed an experiment on a charged oil droplet. By balancing the forces acting on the oil droplet, the charge on a single electron can be calculated. Millikan found that the charge of an oil droplet is always a...

In the famous Millikan oil-drop experiment, tiny spherical droplets of oil are sprayed into a uniform vertical electric field. The drops get a very small charge (just a few electrons) due to friction with the atomizer as they are sprayed. The field is adjusted until the drop (which is viewed through a small telescope) is just balanced against gravity, and therefore remains stationary. Using the measured value of the electric field, we can calculate the charge on the drop and...
