This summer, you receive a call at work that your teen has been arrested for shoplifting, while at the mall with friends. You gave permission for this excursion this morning. How do you respond after retrieving your child from the police station? What future concerns do you have for your child? And how will these concerns influence your response?
In such situation the guardian should go to the police station and free the accused teen from police custody by submitting personal bond to the police. As she is minor and the offense is not so serious she can be released from the police custody.
But the matter does not end here. The case is different. It is dangerous for future. It appears that she did this work for peer pressure. There were friends and the girl took it as challenge. It is a common problem that the teens do to show their intelligence and clevery before the friends. They want to be specially recognized in the group. It is done in the fit of emotion. But it may lead to danger in future.
The girl needs Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is clear that there is lack of perception in her. She is not well aware of the social norms. She needs to realize the consequence of such conduct. The experience in the police station will be an object of shame to her. She will face shame before her friends and she needs proper care. She will not want to attend the school. She will suffer from inferiority problem.
Therefore the therapist must make her aware of her self-esteem. She needs to have self-confidence. In this therapy the family members should support the girl. She also needs the cooperation of her friends.
