China has a number of parallel social media platforms that serve the same purpose as mainstream social media in the Western world. What are the implications of this?
Due to the restriction on western social media platforms by the Chinese government in 2009, there has been an emergence of many parallel social media platforms in China. These platforms offered the same service that the mainstream social media in the Western world. For example- Qzone, Renren, Pengyou provide social network features similar to Facebook. Cultural differences also play an important role in the way these platforms work in China, as some of these platforms also provide additional services to their users. Also, Chinese prefer mobile messaging which is not that popular in the Western world. The social sites as Wechat has a enormous popularity it China, hence, they provide their users with additional services as group chat, video calling, making online friends, file sharing etc. Thus, China has it's own unique form of social networking that caters the needs of Chinese people with respect to their culture.
