Please answer this with a thorough explanation and a solution on how you solved the problem so I can understand this lesson. Thank you very much for helping.
Situation: At 6:00 a.m., A one liter Plain NSS solution was started. It is to run for 18 hours. however, after 6 hours, the IV had to be stopped and transferred to another site. After an hour the IV infusion was resumed.
3.1. How much of the solution was consumed 6 hours after it started ? _____________
3.2. How much of the solution was left when it was transferred to another site? _______________
3.3. What should be the drip rate of the solution after it was reinserted? _____________ ml/Hr ? ___________
3.4. What time is it expected to be consumed? __________
3.5. IV fluids should be consumed within 24 hours once it is opened. Is the above solution consumed within 24 hours after it was started?
3.6. Why should an intravenous solution be consumed within 24 hours? What do we do if there is a remaining amount of solution in the bottle?
3.1 ) amount of solution consumed after 6 hours = 0.33 Litres
Given - 1 litre for 18 hours
L1/T1 = L2/T2 where L - litres , T - time in hour
Let X be the L2 = amount of solution consumed after 6 hours.
1/18 = X/6 (cross multiply)
18 X = 6×1
X= 6/18 = 0.33 L
X= 0.33 litres
3.2) amount of solution left when it was transferred to another site = 0.67 Litres
Total amount of solution = 1 litre
Amount of solution consumed after 6 hours= 0.33 litres
Therefore amount of solution left when it was transferred to another site = 1- 0.33 = 0.67 litres
3.3) the drip rate of the solution after it was reinserted = 55 mL/ hr.
Amount of solution left when it was transferred to another site=0.67 Litres = 670 mL
Total time required for 1 litre is 18 hrs
Before it was transferred to another site, it was run for 6 hours.
So remaining time required is is 18 - 6 = 12 hours
Time required for 670 mL =12 hrs
Therefore time required for X mL = 1 hour
By cross multiplying, X= 670 × 1/ 12 = 55.83
X= 55 mL/ hr
3.4) time when it is consumed completely = 1 am (next day)
Time taken for the IV solution is equal to 18 hrs.
It was started by 6 a.m. and it should be completed bye 12:00 a.m. next day.
But in between it took one hour to resume the IV solution after first 6 hours of infusion.
Therefore it must have been consumed completely by 1 a.m. next day.
3.5) yes of course ,the IV solution was consumed within 19 hours of opening.
