Explain does why:

• On the basis of qual workability the surface characteristics of aggregate have a limited impact on the ultimate strength of concrete.

• the surface characteristics of aggregate have a clear impact on ultimate strength of concrete on the basis of qual water content.

• The cylinder strength is higher than that of cube's.

• The aspect ratio of concrete cylinders has no impact on compressive strength obtained in compression testing machine with brush platens.

• Concrete bridges should not be subjected to stress levels higher than 0.55 of ultimate strengths.

• the maximum aggregate size of aggregate have two opposing effects on concrete strength.

Solutions

Expert Solution

*with maintaining the workability same for tall the surface characteristics of aggregate there is not much imapact on the strength of concrete because its dependent on other factors like water cement ratio, method of mixing, method of compaction, environmental condition, extent of reinforcement etc.

*surface characteristics have impact on ultimate strength of concrete as maintaining the water content , concrete is more workable if the aggregates have smooth surface and rounded shape. if they are angular and have rough surface they provide better intrlocking between the aggregates and it improves the strength of the concrete.

*Here the strength of cube is more compared to the cylinders has contact area of cube is more than the the cylinders and due to the confined ends the cube takes more load than the cylindrical cubes.

*Aspect ration plays role in concrete strength , based on th test results and the experience its is seen that greater the aspect ratio of more than 2, there is decrease in the strength. As the length of cylinder increses the cylinder fails by buckling same failure shown as in long columns.

* with increse in stress higher than the .55 of ultimate strength as this would reults in development of cracks with increse in stress in concrete bridges.

*effects of using maximun sized aggreagates will have problem towards compaction of concrete and workability of the concrete and bond btween the aggreagate and materials in mix is not good and strength would decrease comapared to nominal sizex aggreagates.
