Discuss in detail at least five benefits that can result from safe design of drainage pipes and culverts

Solutions

Expert Solution

The following benefits can be observed from the safe design of Drainage pipes & Culverts:

1. The culverts are the most common drainage crossings that comes across over the forest roads and rural roads. These structures facilitation of movement of small river streams which might build up when rainfall occurs in bountiful quantity. This passage of rivers will keep the traffic movement normal and will help for smooth movement in need of disaster response to such remote inhabitants if any occurs.

2. The drainage pipes should be designed as per standards. The velocity in the pipes should not be over or under the self-cleansing velocity. If the velocity is low then silting happens and thus the flow of river is reduced which may happen the river to flow over the culvert and flood the traffic.

3. The Erosion happens due to gushing of water flow  if the side walls and the earthen are not reinforced with sufficient compacted earth and filters facilitating the drainage of excess by infiltration into the ground.

4. The proper use of materials especially concrete and the embedded steel to reinforce the drainage pipes and the bottom of culvert slab for bending should be as per design and specification laid out in the drawings. These will increase the life of the structure and reduce the regular maintainance.

5. The .safe design practices will build the trust in public to utilise them properly or more so improper usage if done will lessen the impact the shortage of life of a structure.

Since the safe design and construction practices will and shall prove worthwhile in the long term their appropriate implementation is to be done.
