In "Doing Gender," article what do West and Zimmerman mean when they say that gender is something that we "do"?
doing gender explains the interactions taking place in social setting , evolution of the concept of gender is highlighted in the article, according to West and Zimmerman gender is something that we have consciously created over time , this is not an acquired culture instead it is a conscious choice that overtime we made leading to the realization of the concept that is gender.
hence according to West and Zimmerman we consciously created difference between men and women, these differences are not natural ,necessary, essential or even biological. instead are enforced and systematically constructed to reinforce the essentiality of abiding the same. the article makes us reflect on the fact that we were not born with gender differences or gender roles ,we adapted them or learned them in order to fit in the society ,hence proving that we gender is not something given to us rather it is something we do.
