Given the Sample Mass (g) is 0.2254 and AgCl Mass (g) is 0.5295, find the percent chloride.
[Note: Atomic Mass of Cl is 35.4527g and the Atomic Mass of Ag is 107.868.]
Please show calculations.
Given that the Atomic Mass Cl: 35.4527 & Atomic Mass Ag: 107.868
To obtain the grams of chloride in a given quantity of AgCl the mass of AgCl is simply multiplied by the ratio of the atomic weight of the chlorine over the molar mass of the AgCl.
Molar mass of AgCl is = 107.868 + 35.4527
= 143.32 g/mol
So mass of chlorine , m = 0.5295 g x ( 35.4527 / 143.32 )
= 0.131 g
% of chlorine = ( mass of chlorine / mass of the sample ) x 100
= ( 0.131 / 0.2254 ) X 100
= 58.12 %
Therefore the percentage of chlorine is 58.12 %
