There are many types of domestic policy issues; such as housing, land-use, transportation, economy/jobs, air and water quality, environmental protection, education, human and health services, social insurance, and many, many more. When it comes to social insurance programs, there are many types that are provided by government to protect individuals against loss, without regard to need. Some of these programs are very important for the quality of life for individuals in need.
In your own word, please share your thoughts concerning the United States social insurance/service programs. Are the existing programs adequate or do they need major improvements? Why/why not? Any specific examples of concerns, opportunities for improvement, and/or best practices (what is working great and/or what is not work so great)?

23. Mr. Ratchett, an elderly American, was found murdered in his train compartment on the Orient Express at 7 AM. When his body was discovered, the famous detective Hercule Poirot noted that Ratchett had a body temperature of 28 degrees. The body had cooled to a temperature of 27 degrees one hour later. If the normal temperature of a human being is 37 degrees and the air temperature in the train is 22 degrees, estimate the time of Ratchett's death using Newton's Law of Cooling.

20. Stem Cell Survey Adults were randomly selected for a Newsweek poll. They were asked if they “favor or oppose using federal tax dollars to fund medical research using stem cells ob- tained from human embryos.” Of those polled, 481 were in favor, 401 were opposed, and 120 were unsure. A politician claims that people don’t really understand the stem cell issue and their responses to such questions are random responses equivalent to a coin toss. Exclude the 120 subjects who said that they were unsure, and use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the proportion of subjects who respond in favor is equal to 0.5. What does the result sug- gest about the politician’s claim?

It has been reported that there has been a significant increase in miniscule airborne particles in the major capital cities of India. The particles are so small they can travel deep into a human lung, and from there into the bloodstream. There the toxins can cause respiratory illness, heart attacks and cancer. Suppose in the next five years there are sharp increases in the assembly of petrol-based vehicles and consumer demand for high-tech air purifiers and anti-pollution masks. Suppose that there is also a substantial increase in government spending on health care as more people visit the doctors due to chest infections. a) Explain why there is likely to be an increase in India’s measured GDP in this case. b) Discuss whether GDP is a ‘good’ measure of progress in this case. What criteria would you use to determine whether an observed behavior was an evolved psychological mechanism in a species? Use lecture notes about the characteristics of evolved psychological mechanisms to answer this question, as well as anything from the Alcock readings that you think addresses this question and Identifying Adaptive Problems by Buss (this reading sent to you via email). You might want to also use Observing and Analyzing Human Non-verbal Behavior by Bernstein and Living our Limbic Legacy by Navarro and Karlins (these two readings also emailed to you earlier in the class) and Yawning, by Robert Provine (in Exploring Animal Behavior). Using these last three readings may depend on what behavior you decide to assess as an EPM.
