Suppose the manufacturing labor market, which is nonunionized, is in equilibrium at a wage equal to $25. Suppose now that the AFL-CIO (a labor organization) organizes the workers in the manufacturing market and negotiates a wage of $30 per hour. After the workers become unionized, how many workers do manufacturing firms collectively hire?

160 workers

200 workers

240 workers

There is not enough information to determine the number of workers.

After an employer pays the cost of educating a worker, the

Question 3 options:

worker has a lower level of human capital.

worker should become less productive.

worker's value of the marginal product should decrease.

worker might look for another job unless his employer pays him more

Assuming that all other things are equal, including the wage, which of the following statements is correct?

Question 2 options:

The quantity of labor supplied for difficult jobs exceeds that for easy jobs.

The quantity of labor supplied for fun jobs exceeds that for dull jobs.

The quantity of labor supplied for dangerous jobs exceeds that for safe jobs.

The quantity of labor supplied for dirty, outdoor jobs exceeds that for jobs in clean environments.

Wages of doctors tend to be higher than wages of bankers. Which of the following is not a compensating differential explaining the difference in wages?

Question 1 options:

1. Two samples of a low hardness steel were tested using a Rockwell C hardness tester and the Rockwell B scale at the same lab on the same day. The difference between the average hardness of the two samples was 0.5 Rockwell C. Do you think there is a significant difference in the hardness? Justify your answer.

2. Two manufacturers produce a steel. Manufacturer B claims their steel is better than manufacturer A because their average Rockwell B hardness is 68.4 HRBW while that of manufacturer B is 60.5 HRBW. Do you think there is a significant difference in their hardness? Justify your answer. Hint: Use the specification!!

3. Find an important engineering failure that involves some of the topics discussed in MSE 350. Describe the failure, why it occurred, the damage (human, environmental, and economic) and the changes that could have been made in the design to avoid the failure. Was the failure caused by lack of engineering knowledge at the time, engineering error, or management/government error? Discuss!!

4.

For each of the following common items, identify what they are commonly made of, the material type (composite, metal, semiconductor, polymer <thermoplastic, thermoset or elastomer>, ceramic, glass. Describe why that material type is used. Include at least two references for your answers (websites are fine, but try and find good ones). If more than one material type is used in the items, include them all! Be careful to use proper engineering vocabulary when answering this question!

From the section of the birth, life, and death of stars, what did you learn about how stars are born and how long they live and how they die that was new to you and interesting? Do you understand it or is there something that still is hard to grasp? Are there topics that you would like to know more about? Do you understand when a protostar finally becomes a Main Sequence star, what does it need to achieve to be called a main sequence star and why does it take light stars such a long time to achieve this? What is a Herbig-Haro object? Do you understand why light stars live longer than heavy stars; is that fair??   Do you understand the difference between planetary nebulae and type 2 supernova; what type of stars experience the Helium Flash and why? Why do light mass stars experience 2 Red Giant stages whereas Heavy stars experience only 1 Red Giant Stage? Which stars make the heavier elements of the periodic table and why? Do you understand the difference between type 2 supernova, type 1 supernova and nova and how they are created? What are some famous supernova observations in history, see if you can come up with some other than the ones mentioned in the lecture??   How can we harness the energy of a supernova as a source of clean energy and do you think one day humanity will find a way of doing this? What impressions does this section leave on you on the lifecycle of stars and the analogy with human lifecycle, how does it change your worldview and perspective of life and inspire you?

Many Questions: Perhaps it is not important to ask what happened, perhaps it is. What must be important is what can you or I do, at the community, or at a national level? What can we do at a global level to make a healthier economy so that young people can once again have a reasonable expectation that if they work hard they can make a living? Was there ever a time where this was a reasonable expectation, or is it a false sense of history looking back through rose colored glasses?

What is important to me (I'm closer to 60 than I'd like to admit) is to recognize that we have the technologies to feed everyone in the world and energy sources to do it with much less pollution. We could prevent the global warming we are now experiencing, and provide better healthcare to many people in the world. We have the resources and knowledge base, but it is increasingly clear that so far we lack the will as a species.

More Questions: How do we resolve these two huge disconnects between the huge unemployment of youth worldwide indicating a failing economy and failure to respond to fundamental human needs, while at the same time we do have the means available to resolve many issues?

What do you think? Is there a solution to this puzzle? What can we do to put the pieces of the puzzle together for the sake of humanity? Is there a way to save humanity and other creatures of the earth from ourselves, to make a better life and a brighter future for Greek, Italian, Egyptian and American youths? Our economies are, after all, connected now. Is there a way to do this without destroying Indigenous and other cultural traditions? Will they be able to keep on doing what they have for generations?

How to implement the below mentioned 05 measures (to enhance good governance) in schools?

  • Eliminate the industrial age values: All day long, students do nothing but follow only instructions. At school, the childrens are awarded for exactly what theu taught. In this modern world, inorder to live, we should be competitive, skillful and creative. Thus this industrial age values should be removed and children should get chances to develop such skills.
  • Implementing autonomy and control : At schools, our children experience a complete lack of autonomy and control. Every minute of a child's life is entirely controlled by the system. The children should be given chances on making decisions, what to do and when to do.
  • Removal of inauthentic learning : Most of the learnings that happens in schools todays is not authentic because it deals on memorization and wrote learning. The learned things may forget after the exams. The learning system should be made more authentic without just memorization. Exams should be conducted on the basis of practicals more than written exams.
  • Creating a room for passions and interests : we have an extremely standardized system where each child must learn the something at the same time in the same way. This doesn't respect the basic quality of being human that each was unique and have their own potentials. Thus the system should provide space for each child to determine children's passion and interests.
  • Mode of lecturing : In the current system, children are lectured more than five hours a day. Each of the students have their own level of understanding. Thus the lectures should be made fully digitalized with videos and animations. Thus all children can catch the concepts very easily.
